What can I say for 2 days I lived with STUFF, lots of STUFF. We've already shipped 25 boxes home, so said STUFF, where it came from I don't know. Thank heavens most of this was given away as its not coming with us, to our new place, or home to Australia. Whew.Friday, January 22, 2010

Photo of the Day No.6 - Our New Friends
Last night it started snowing, then snowed more, and more, and this evening when we got home from work after leaving work in a blizzard of snow cornflakes Mark and I headed up to Hampstead Heath and Parliament hill to enjoy the snow. The lights of London reflected off the white sky and white snow made a potentially miserable winters evening blindingly light. Amazing. Oh, and the crunching sound of snow under your feet is better than listening to coco pops for breakfast. I WILL MISS SNOW!!!
When we got back we "made" a few little friends out front of the flat. Marks was slightly disrespectful of my penguin looking snow man and decided to make his own, more normal (apparently) looking snow man. Perfectly, a kind neighbour had left out their Xmas tree for our new friends to enjoy too.
Ps later in the evening our snow friends got a new friend, seems we're not the only ones building snowmen!!

It certainly felt cold my feet felt like they were encassed in mini blocks of ice on my walk home from the bus. Merry Christmas London Style
Well what has now been and gone is our last (and first) Christmas in London, a quiet little dinner for two with a goose for 7. Whew, she was a big bird, and probably much offended that I kept calling her a turkey. In the end I banned the use of the Turkey Xmas hat, to cease my trigger to say the T-U-R-K-E-Y word...
It was delicious and needy, requiring much de-oiling during the cooking, thus whilst most of the afternoon I sat watching children's cartoon movies. Though The Incredibles is the only one I made it all the way through. Poor Mark was up and down like a yo yo to the Goose getting her all good to go for dinner.
We ate eventually at about 5.30pm, and it was definitely worth the wait, all the trimmings, potato's, sweet potato, carrots, beans, broccoli, parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, full cranberry and apple stuffing with delicious goose fat and red onion gravy...mmmm; your mouth watering yet, mine is and its 10pm at night and I have just had peppermint tea, which does not go with any of the above!

A cosy new home
We are now officially in and suprisingly, how time flies, we have nearly been in a whole month. It only took a week to unpack everything and there are still a few boxes of papers hidden safely away and I am sure will be neglected till we need to move again. Why then have you waited to see more photos? Blame the internet people - soo sooo slow, we only got it active on Friday, it only took 2 weeks, grr.
As you can see I have made it very homely and it is indeed lovely and cosy. Did I mention the spare bedroom for would be visitors?? Hint hint. As you can also see I have plenty of books and more are really not required, though I just bought a guidebook on France, does that count as a book? Its reference and super important for upcoming travels, so I am going to say no.
We have already used our fully equiped kitchen - you'd think since its been 3 weeks - and I have even stepped in it too. Yes - donned tools and cooked....hard to imagine but it did happen! I have made a delicious stirfry from scratch, wihtout managing to burn down the flat and also I made pasta too. Mark is ever so helpful, but he gets in the way and is banished to the sofa.

North Londerners once more
We have done it we have moved back North, it is a move that has been said never happens, once South never again North. I suppose since we are Australian and not English the rule does not apply.
So we now are living in Dartmouth Park, which is a tiny pocket suburb surrounded by Highgate, Tufnell Park, and Kentish Town. We are about 3 minutes from Tufnell Park tube station (Northern Line, so easy Southern access) and 10 minutes walk (all downhill) to Kentish Town tube and overground (which takes us to Kings Cross or West Hampstead in mere minutes). We are also a very short 10 minute walk to Parliament Hill, where you can go fly a kite! Or sledge even when there is snow...

Battersea Rocks!
I know I have only been here a week, but seriously this is so great to live here! Why is it great, why am I peeing my pants with excitment and joy that my goodness I have been blessed by having found the most perfect location in London...well let me tell you why!
1. The commute is a godsend, the bus stop 30 seconds from my door, with 2 different buses that come about every 6-7 minutes....and together that probably works out to about 2-3 minutes for an appropriate bus.
Then i take my bus - albeit a NON-CHAV bus - past the stunning Battersea Park, across the gorgeous Chelsea bridge (pics below view on my walk home) to Sloane Square, passing beautiful buildings with terracotta red bricks and decorative pelmets.
Now, I have to say that I love buildings like this and I sigh blissfully and thank silently the people who once upon a time decided that it was ok to take your time building something, and god damn it while we are at it lets make it beautiful - none of this glass, glass and more glass, lets get it up in 2 days crappy buildings!
Anyway...my commute, oh yes, then I take the District (Green line) from Sloane Square and its not too busy from there, and if it is lots of people get off at the next stop (Victoria) and so I get a seat. This line is mostly above ground so its not too hot either, which will be very nice as the the weather warms up. All up the trip to my current work....is about 40 minutes door to door...
2. There is a lovely little coffee shop just near my bus stop at Sloane Square, and get this - THE COFFEE IS ACTUALLY GOOD...oh my god....that is where I am going every morning now.
3. My flat mates are really nice! Sarah made a bean pasta, made loads and shared it, and it was delicious. Cliff got fantastic pizza and shared that too, proper Italian stuff too, not the hideous Dominos stuff.
4. The room is a decent size and all my stuff fits in and I have a lot of stuff. Its also given me the incentive to go through my many clothes to sort out what I need and don't - its been a while since I have done that propertly.
5. About the flat in general, its always toasty warm, there is lots of light with lots of big windows, the rooms are huge, the kitchen is amazing (even has a dishwasher...woo hoo), the lounges comfy, there is a TV (which to be quite honest I watched one episode of Scrubs the other night and that is it...note I have been here since Saturday and its now Friday), we have a cleaner, there is plenty of extra storage, its very tidy (but no one is anal about it), and best of all is the outside space and deck, which has been nice to sit out on over the past couple of days.
6. The walk to the tube is about 30 minutes...but as with my commute it means I get to walk past (or through...) Battersea Park and over the Chelsea Bridge.
7. My corner shop is a Sainsburys Local, so it is decent with proper things that I need that are not over priced.
8. The overland train is a mere 6 minute walk away and 7 minutes more to Waterloo Station and you can go anywhere from there. Same if I catch a bus about 10 minutes the other way, gets me to Clapham Junction...again its like a train hub to anywhere in the South....
9. I am near all my friends who live in Surbiton, Putney, Battersea (the other side), Richmond, and London Bridge....and in general all, South...though Canary Wharf is not super close.
10. Well I just love it..............
